Audio formats

MP3 is currently the most popular digital audio format. It is widely used in file-sharing networks because of the small size of the target files (about 1 /10th of the original file from an audio CD). This format ensures the quality of sound is very faithful to the original, thanks to special data compression algorithms. Absolutely all RoverMedia players support the MP3 format, as do all modern stereos and DVD-players.

WMA is a file format developed by the Microsoft Company to store and broadcast audio. The main advantage of WMA to MP3 is a greater ability to compress the data. The latest versions of the format, starting with Windows Media Audio 9.1, are provided for encoding without losing quality, and multi-channel encoded surround sound and voice encoding.

WAV is an audio file-container for storing digitised audio stream recording. This format is primarily used for sound recording with built-in voice recorder/players and is supported by RoverMedia and most modern devices.

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is one of the most popular formats for audio compression without loss of quality. Unlike the formats MP3, WMA, encoding audio from the audio stream does not delete any information. With FLAC files are not only suitable for high-quality music tracks on portable Rovermedia players, but also on high-end equipment.

Video formats

MPEG 4 is one of the most popular video formats. Recently Rovermedia portable players started supporting and embracing this format. The format provides a good picture and sound quality, has the best file size ratio and quality of content.

AVI is a file-container, which can contain video/audio data compressed using different combinations of codecs, which allows simultaneous playback of video and sound. One of the most popular combinations of codecs can be MPEG4 video and MP3 audio.

FLV is another file-container, but is more narrowly focused. This format is used for easy transmission of video over the Internet. In the various social networks, such as Myspace and Facebook, video-hosting services like YouTube, Google Video, use exactly the same format.

RM, RAM, RMVB are formats of media files that belong to the company «RealNetworks Products and Services». The main advantages of this format are an acceptable image quality and intelligibility of speech at very low bit rate video stream, as well as the small size of the final file.

MTV, AMV is one of the first video formats created specifically for portable media players with 1.8'' displays. At a time when portable devices just started to support video playback, they were the most frequently used tool for compression of video files.
